When Literary Heritage Becomes a 3D Experience
Tonecheer’s collaboration with the British Library marks one of the brand’s most significant explorations into literary and cultural IP.
Rather than simply reproducing the appearance of a classic book, Tonecheer worked with the British Library to reinterpret some of the world’s most enduring literary stories as immersive 3D experiences.
The collaboration brings together three products across two product formats: Shakespeare’s Verse and A Midsummer Night’s Dream transform Shakespearean literature into detailed Book Nook scenes, while Alice’s Tea Party turns the fantastical world of Alice into a mechanical music box.
Together, they explore a simple but powerful idea:
What if the stories preserved in a great library could step beyond the pages and become part of the spaces where we live?
1. TQ129 Shakespeare’s Verse — A Stage for Shakespeare’s Greatest Stories
Shakespeare’s Verse brings the theatrical world of William Shakespeare into a miniature 3D scene.
Rather than focusing on a single play, the design brings together characters and elements from four of Shakespeare’s celebrated works: Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and The Merchant of Venice. The result is a compact theatrical universe where multiple stories coexist within one bookshelf display.
With 212 pre-cut wooden pieces, the model transforms the building process into a hands-on journey through Shakespeare’s literary world. Integrated LED lighting further emphasizes the atmosphere of the miniature stage, allowing the finished piece to become both a DIY project and a decorative literary display.
Instead of simply displaying Shakespeare's name, the product presents his works through characters, architecture, theatrical atmosphere, and storytelling details.
It turns a bookshelf into a miniature stage.
2. TQ130 A Midsummer Night’s Dream — Step Into the Enchanted Forest
If Shakespeare’s Verse represents the broader theatrical universe of Shakespeare, A Midsummer Night’s Dream takes audiences directly into one of his most magical worlds.
Inspired by the enchanted forest of Shakespeare’s beloved comedy, the Book Nook recreates the playful chaos created by Puck and the love potion, alongside the tangled relationships between Lysander, Hermia, Helena, and Demetrius.
The forest becomes a layered miniature environment filled with trees, foliage, characters, and atmospheric details.
With 206 pre-cut wooden pieces, the model offers a hands-on DIY experience before becoming a finished literary scene. Integrated lighting adds another layer to the enchanted atmosphere, while the compact format allows the finished world to sit naturally between books.
It is Shakespeare transformed from something to be read into a world that can be physically entered and displayed.
3. TQ073 Alice’s Tea Party — When Wonderland Starts to Move
The third product takes the collaboration beyond Book Nooks.
Alice’s Tea Party is a mechanical music box inspired by the British Library’s collection The Nursery "Alice", a Victorian adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. The design recreates the famous Mad Hatter’s Tea Party after Alice falls down the rabbit hole.
But this is not simply a miniature tea party. The scene incorporates mechanical movement and music to create an animated version of Wonderland. The rotating elements of the scene move in sync with the music, while the detailed architecture, characters, and theatrical setting create a miniature fantasy world.
The design brings together Alice, the Mad Hatter’s world, the Red Queen’s castle, playing-card guards, roses, and other familiar Wonderland imagery into one elaborate tabletop scene.
With 209 pre-cut wooden pieces and a more challenging build, the product combines craftsmanship, mechanical movement, music, and storytelling in a single collectible experience.
Here, a literary story does not simply become a picture. It moves. It plays music. It comes alive.
From Books to Living Stories
The three products demonstrate three different approaches to translating literary heritage into physical experiences.
Shakespeare’s Verse creates a miniature stage for multiple literary classics.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream invites audiences into a specific enchanted world.
Alice’s Tea Party adds movement and music to turn a familiar literary scene into an animated mechanical experience.
Together, they show that literary IP can take many physical forms.
A story can become a scene.
A scene can become a world.
And a world can become an interactive object that lives alongside the books on a shelf.
For Readers, Collectors, and Literary Fans
For readers and collectors, the British Library collaboration offers a different kind of literary merchandise.
These products are not simply objects carrying the name of a famous author or story. Their value comes from the process of rebuilding the story itself.
The assembly process creates personal involvement, while the finished product provides a lasting display.
For Shakespeare enthusiasts, the two Book Nooks offer a visual interpretation of his theatrical world. For fans of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, the music box adds movement and sound to one of the story’s most recognizable scenes.
The result is a more personal relationship with literary heritage:read it, build it, display it, and experience it again.
For Bookstores, Gift Shops, and Cultural Retailers
For retailers, the collaboration demonstrates the potential of combining literary heritage with hands-on creative products.
The British Library association gives the collection a strong cultural and storytelling foundation, while the product formats create clear retail differentiation.
The two Book Nooks naturally connect with bookshelves, bookstores, literary gifts, and adult DIY hobbies.
The music box introduces another product category, bringing together music, craftsmanship, nostalgia, and literary storytelling.
This allows retailers to present the collection not simply as another puzzle category, but as a broader literary lifestyle and cultural gift collection.
For bookstores in particular, the connection is especially natural: the products can sit alongside the books that inspired them, turning literary merchandise into an extension of the reading experience.
Bringing the Library Beyond Its Walls
The Tonecheer × British Library collaboration represents more than three individual products.
It demonstrates what can happen when cultural heritage meets contemporary product design.
The British Library preserves stories, manuscripts, illustrations, and literary history.
Tonecheer translates that heritage into something people can physically build, display, illuminate, move, and experience.
From Shakespeare’s stage to an enchanted forest, and from Wonderland’s tea party to a moving mechanical scene, these collaborations give classic literature a new physical language.
The stories remain the same. The way we experience them can change.
